Svensson Brothers – Bröderna Svensson
Gustav and Ivar Svensson began making steel carving chisels and gouges in Vaggeryd, Sweden in 1931. Eventually the Svensson Brothers (Bröderna Svensson) made over 640 different sizes and forms of carving chisels and gouges.
Svensson Brothers was taken over by Hans Karlsson in 1994 where he continues to produce a line of wood working and carving tools, under his own name, H Karlsson Klensmide AB.
Below is an example of a Svensson Brothers gouge.
The Bröderna Svensson blade stamp is simple and recognizeable, basically an “S” with arrowheads on each side pointing away from the “S”.
Some other interesting info about the Svensson tools- I don’t think they made regular carpenter style chisels, only artist style carving tools. Their chisels also had a very distinctive wood handle that they used on their tools. It was rather light duty, a tapered wood octagon handle, without a hammer ring or a ferrule. Instead, it only had a ring set into the end where the tang entered the handle. This was supposed to keep the handle from cracking when the tang was driven into the handle. I’m sure these would not hold up to any real pounding but they are very distinctive.
